Ancient Greek Life
At the foot of the Acropolis is "The Ancient Agora" which was the
center of every day life in ancient Athens and all over the city are
structures that aren't quite as old - but equally as spectacular.
We loved it all.
Agora
In the front here are the ruins of the official counsel
chamber.
Hephaisteion
This temple is the best preserved building in the Ancient
Agora and was built in 449-440 B.C. Pretty cool, huh?
Brent Goes Artsy On Us
There were lots of opportunities for great
shots - this is one of Kate's favorites.
The Vista
The foreground shows most of what was the Agora - you
can see how it sits right below the Acropolis.
Panagia Gorgoepikoos
This tiny 12th century church is known for its beautiful
carvings and is right in the center of one of the busiest
shopping districts in the city.
The Roman Agora
The Ancient Roman Agora sits right next to the Ancient
Greek Agora - slightly further from the Acropolis.
Not even marked
Everywhere you turn there is another piece of the past
that's preserved for your enjoyment.
Old and New
The modern market place is nestled among
the ruins of ancient life.
Tower Of Winds
Set within the Roman Agora was built as both a weather
vane and water clock. It's amazingly well preserved.
The Fethiye Mosque
This ancient mosque built in the 15th century sits at the
edge of the Roman Agora (yes, Roman Agora in Athens -
those Romans did travel...) and yes, it's a mosque -
Athens was, and remains quite the melting pot of
cultures.
